Wednesday April 30

April 30th is El Dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros- Day of Children and Books. In 1997, teachers and librarians in numerous cities selected this day for remembering the power of words in the lives of children and for honoring all the languages spoken in the homes in this country. One in five of our school children comes from a home in which a language other than English is spoken. By honoring these languages, we celebrate our linguistic and cultural wealth.
Douglass Kindergarten students celebrated the Day of Children and Books by having a “Reading Picnic.” What a lovely, sunny day for a reading picnic in our schoolyard.
Seven different picnic blankets hosting different themes such as; Independent reading, Big Book Reading, Multicultural Books (Guest Reader-The Very Hungry Caterpillar in espanol), Word Work, Picture Books, Author of the Day-Eric Carle, Dr. Suesus. Small groups of children rotated around to each blanket relaxing, reading, and enjoying this new experience.

Janet, that is way cool. I didn't know that about today. I wish I had- I might have incorporated it into my teachings. Who organized the event at your school? I love the picnic blankets with reading themes. That's great. Do you have anything in writing that details the event? I'd love to have a copy.

Beth, Thank you for your interest. I organize the event at my school each year. I came across the event at @google image while researching something else. At the time, I was teaching first grade at Elkin School which is bi-lingual. I thought it was interesting and began the "Reading Picnic" to celebrate the day.
